Disc Harrow Types Explained: Offset vs. Tandem and Hitch Options

Disc harrows may look similar at first glance, but their gang arrangement, hitch system, disc size and blade profile can produce very different results in the field. For importers, dealers and farm operators, understanding these classifications makes it easier to match an implement to the tractor, soil condition and working pattern.

1. Classification by Disc Gang Arrangement

The first dimension describes how the disc gangs are arranged on the frame. The two principal configurations are the offset disc harrow and the tandem, or opposed-gang, disc harrow.

Offset Heavy-Duty Disc Harrow

An offset disc harrow normally has front and rear disc gangs whose concave faces point in opposite directions. During operation, the centreline of the working width is offset from the tractor’s longitudinal centreline, which gives this design its name.

  • Balanced side forces: The front and rear gangs generate opposing lateral forces, helping the tractor and implement travel in a stable line.
  • Full-width coverage: A correctly adjusted offset harrow provides continuous soil coverage without leaving an untreated strip in the centre.
  • Broad field suitability: It is widely used for residue incorporation, clod breaking and primary or secondary tillage.
  • Orchard flexibility: The offset working position can allow the discs to reach beneath tree canopies while the tractor stays farther from branches.

Common Chinese model references include the 1BZ series hydraulic offset heavy disc harrow and the 1BZN series modified hydraulic offset heavy disc harrow. Model codes vary by manufacturer and should always be checked against the actual specification sheet.

Tandem or Opposed-Gang Heavy-Duty Disc Harrow

In a tandem or opposed-gang harrow, the disc gangs are arranged symmetrically on both sides of the tractor centreline. The lateral forces produced by the left and right gangs balance each other.

  • Single-row opposed arrangement: One row is divided into left and right gangs, with the concave faces directed away from each other.
  • Double-row or tandem arrangement: Front and rear rows each contain symmetrical left and right gangs. The rear discs work between the paths of the front discs to improve coverage.
  • Flexible turning: The symmetrical layout generally allows convenient left and right turns, which can be helpful in irregularly shaped fields.
  • Convenient gang-angle adjustment: Many designs allow the working angle to be changed for different penetration and residue conditions.
  • Centre-strip risk: A poorly designed or incorrectly adjusted machine may leave an untreated ridge or strip where the inner gangs meet. Overlapping or staggered gang arrangements are commonly used to reduce this problem.

2. Classification by Hitch System

The second important dimension is how the harrow connects to the tractor. Heavy disc harrows are generally supplied as trailed, mounted or semi-mounted implements.

  • Trailed: The harrow has its own transport wheels and is pulled from the tractor drawbar. This arrangement is common on wide and heavy machines because the implement carries most of its own weight.
  • Three-point mounted: The harrow connects directly to the tractor’s three-point linkage and is raised by the tractor hydraulic system. Mounted machines are compact and manoeuvrable, but their weight must remain within the tractor’s lift capacity.
  • Semi-mounted: The front of the implement connects more closely to the tractor linkage while rear hydraulic transport wheels carry part of the machine weight. This design combines manoeuvrability with improved weight support and is frequently used on heavier configurations.

3. Other Ways to Classify Disc Harrows

By Disc Diameter and Machine Weight

  • Light-duty: Disc diameter commonly around 460 mm.
  • Medium-duty: Disc diameter commonly around 560 mm.
  • Heavy-duty: Disc diameter commonly around 660 mm, with a heavier frame for deeper penetration and demanding residue conditions.

These figures are useful general references rather than universal standards. Frame weight per disc, gang angle, disc spacing and soil conditions also have a major influence on penetration.

By Disc Edge Profile

  • Plain discs: A continuous edge offers simple construction and smooth soil movement.
  • Notched discs: Cut-outs around the edge improve penetration and help cut weeds and crop residue. Notched blades are commonly used on heavy-duty harrows, especially on the front gang.

How to Choose the Right Disc Harrow

Choose the gang arrangement according to field shape and the required soil finish. An offset harrow is a proven option for high-capacity work, residue incorporation and full-width coverage. A tandem design can be attractive where balanced operation and frequent turning are priorities.

The hitch system must match the tractor’s drawbar, three-point linkage, hydraulic capacity and lift capacity. Also confirm tractor horsepower, machine weight, working width, disc diameter, transport width and local road-transport requirements before ordering.
